History
Designed in 1966, the S11 chair stemmed from the desire to create a novel piece using a pioneering technique, the “48×72” assembly. The S11 applies some of the technical elements of the S10, such as the binding and the stretched leather pieces that ensure the structure’s solidity. S 11 is notable for the aesthetic sophistication of the leather that wraps around the sides, the back, and the front of the chair, making the structure higher and more solid than the S 10.
The technical complexity of the seat is justified in its aesthetic balance and functionality. The solid appearance of the S 11, which adapts to almost all the Chapo tables and desks, illustrates the variety of forms that the “48×72” assembly can produce. The three “48×72” wood pieces visible at the chair’s corners and the decision to present the “72” side in front accentuates the chair’s stability and gives it an architectural allure. S 11 is considered the first sculptural chair, a style that Pierre Chapo developed for his later chair designs.
