CHAIR WITH 7 - SHAPED BACK

In 1973, Pierre Chapo developed the T 21 table and the S 31 stool. With the S 34 chair, he completed the range of furniture using bundled-leg assemblies. The complexity of this bundled base beneath a seat required Pierre Chapo to deepen his research—particularly in plane geometry—in order to achieve a flawless construction. The diameter of the S 34 chair seat is too small to ensure the structure’s stability, and too large, compared with the S 31 stool, to reuse its tripod base. Pierre Chapo found the solution by imagining a dihedral angle placed on the floor. This angle supports the seat at its midpoint and, at its upper part, the backrest. This section rests on a transverse leg reinforced by the assembly of the two other legs, which are fitted together in a bundled configuration to distribute weight according to the stacking of the four legs. The final leg completes the assembly by bracing itself against the first leg forming the dihedral angle. The polygon-shaped seat also provides the optimal positioning for a perfect distribution of the sitter’s weight.
The asymmetric case built to extend one of the legs reminds to the handle of the scythe or the number 7, a chair in wood.
