In 1967, at the Arts Ménagers fair, Pierre Chapo presented new creations and exhibited the B 17 shelf for the first time. Mounted on the wall, B 17 frees up considerable floor space. The shelf, whose presence surprises by its discretion and elegance, comes in several versions of varying length and height. The harmony between the uprights and the shelves (with 50-millimeter sections) is accentuated by the originality of its support system. Typically, supports—as their name implies—hold up the shelves of a piece of furniture or the projections of a building. Ignoring this universal rule, Pierre Chapo decided to design a support that locks into the upright, allowing the shelf to be fixed underneath its support and ensuring a solid hold. Through a balance of forces and gravity, the more weight the shelf carries, the more its components fit securely into the upright.
The brackets positioned above the shelves serve as book supports; their heights are fixed, the two vertical supports rest on the floor, and wall mounting is still sufficient. The horizontal supports are attached to the uprights by interlocking them, allowing the shelf to be secured beneath its support and ensuring a stable hold.
