L01

godot bed

In 1959, Pierre Chapo designed a bed for writer Samuel Beckett, who had placed a special order. The designer jokingly named the bed “Godot,” a nod to the play Waiting for Godot. The L 01 became part of the Chapo nomenclature and can be considered the starting point of the first Chapo collection, officially presented at the beginning of 1963. The L 01 made a strong impression with the simplicity of its clean, taut lines, its removable headboard, and the comb-style joinery at the corners of its frame—the only decorative feature, which would later be widely imitated. The piece can be used as a sleeping bed, a bench version, or a daybed.
Four cylindrical feet Ø 8 set back, a plywood base pierced with holes for mattress ventilation, with or without a head panel. Pushed along a wall, covered with fabric tucked into the wooden frame, it serves as a seat without giving the room where it is located the character of a bedroom.
